It is a portrait of a workingman’s life- his own and, in a way, the lives of all of us.” This is a story of actual events delightfully fictionalized representing a period of time both magical and eclectic.

It portrays the endearing relationship between a grandfather and his grandson growing up in an Indiana steel town in the early 1940s.Reminiscent of Mark Twains Adventures of Tom Sawyer, it was written in two parts. The first deals with the life and death of Harry Ahrens, an eccentric who believed that God spoke to him, seen through the eyes of Joey and his grandfather.Part Two focuses on a neighborhood that is more than brick and mortar and wood frame houses sitting side by side between street signs.

It is you and I born into our culture, immersed in our beliefs defiant in our individuality and determined to attain our hopes and our dreams. And to understand the neighborhood, you must know the people who lived and spent their lives and perhaps died there. On that captivating city block of Olcott Avenue where Joey and his grandfather lived, Generals Lee and Grant crossed paths everyday with foreigners who had secreted a fistful of earth from their homelands and cried whenever they opened their hidden sack of memories, but familiarity, hunger and time bred assimilation which significantly reduced the bags importance.

Tears dried up and that small bag of earth eventually became nothing more and nothing less than what it was, and all that mattered was survival.Leon DespresFormer Alderman, Author, Activist- ChicagoJoe Gutierrez has written a unique and useful semi-autobiographic chronicle of life in a vibrant neighborhood not unlike those throughout Chicago.

It preserves his beloved “Grandpa” and countless others to testify to a lost neighborhood. It is an example to all of us – to write. Every story of a life has hidden fascinations. Would we not be fortunate if autobiographical writings had been left by, say, Jean Baptiste, Pointe Du Sable or Richard M.Daley? For you write to preserve a rich record, the city of Chicago and Northwest Indiana are indebted to you, Joe Gutierrez.Karol JackowskiCatholic Nun, Author, Commentator- New YorkFirst and foremost, Joe Gutierrez is an excellent writer and a great storyteller.

The characters in ‘Secrets of The Neighborhood’ are interesting, even riveting, well-developed, and true to form. I love the relationship between Joey and his grandfather, and how well the richly complex world of East Chicago is created for the reader. Having grown up there, I was completely drawn into the story in Chapter One with entry into the Voge Theater, and could easily envision all the local landmarks: Caesarea Batista Hall, the Chinese Laundry, Hoffman’s Drug Store with the soda fountain counter, Kosciusko Park, and downtown East Chicago.

I was even drooling at the mention of Hot Dog John’s who had, to this day, the best chilidogs. For those who don’t know “The Neighborhood” this story takes them there and let’s them taste and see how unique life was growing up in “the Region.”William KornblumAuthor, Chair, Center for Urban Research, Sociology Professor, CUNY- New YorkFrom wherever you come, no matter what age you are, Joe Gutierrez’s ‘Secrets of The Neighborhood’ will make you remember your own coming of age. Joe has a knack for evoking scenes of childhood and adolescence.
